Workshop Day 1:

Cooling methods for multi MW sized CSP power plants - innovative technologies solving cooling water issue

Workshop for Investors, Project developers, Engineering firms and Authorities

The number of multi MW sized Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects is increasing. More and more often the huge amount of water required for the operation of the CSP-Power plant is becoming a critical issue, because of unavailability of water and/or because of permission requirements and/or because of costs for water. Beside the washing of mirrors of the CSP-plant the water required for the cooling system is the biggest part.

Typical locations for CSP-Power plant are in desert regions where water is rare. The ‘cold end’ of a CSP-power plant is one of the key factors to increase the electrical efficiency. Based on the availability of water the challenge is to optimize the water consumption, the costs for water and the efficiency of a CSP-power plant.

In this workshop the key basics of the cooling systems for power plants will be presented and explained. The different cooling technologies at the market will be examined including new and innovative technologies by specific suppliers. An evaluation of the available technologies (wet cooling, hybrid cooling, air cooling systems etc.) will take place. The selection of an optimized system on the basis of an example CSP-power project will be carried out as exercise example. Special challenges with regard to CSP-power plants will be addressed.

What to gain from this workshop:

  • Find out about the technologies available for the ‘cold end’ of CSP-Power plants.
  • Learn about the main criteria to find the optimum for the cooling system of a CSP-power plant.
  • Learn about the arguments for the permission of a CSP power plant with regard to authorities.
  • Find out how to optimize the economy of a CSP power project by the cooling system.
  • Learn about the methodology how to select the best system.

The workshop will be held and managed by the Managing Directors and main shareholders of enolcon gmbh (www.enolcon.com). Enolcon is a Consulting and Engineering company which is active in the power business, both conventional and renewable energy. Among other actual CSP-activities is the feasibility study and pre-engineering for the 100 MWel-CSP-plant at Maan in Jordan.

Workshop Day 2:

Combined Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technology with Seawater Desalination (DES) in the Mediterranean region.

Mediterranean countries are facing high socioeconomic development needs, along with rapid population increase and increased urbanization. As a consequence, energy demand is expected to grow significantly in the next decades. While conventional energy resource endowment greatly differs between countries, they all face increasing local and global environmental constraints.

In addition to energy and environment, water is becoming a major source of pressure in most of the Mediterranean countries. Indeed, freshwater sources in the region are persistently over-used. Thus, besides water management, new and unconventional sources of water must be found. It is common to all those solutions that they require significant amounts of energy. Moreover, sustainable supply of water requires a sustainable source of energy, sustainable meaning in this context affordable, compatible with society and the environment, and secure.

Within this context given and the high potential of solar resource in the Mediterranean region the following session is announced

It will give:

  • An overview of technology of concentrated solar power and desalination
  • Show configurations adapted for application in the Mediterranean countries.
  • Sescribe the technical and economical potential of the combined generation in the region.

The workshop will be held and managed by the Managing Directors of kernenergien (www.kernenergien.com). kernenergien is a worldwide operating consulting company. Their service offering portfolio includes conception, planning and development of huge solar power stations. The range of their activities comprises thermodynamic design layout, economic analysis as well as project development, project organisation and project handling of solar power stations
